Texans Name Ryan Fitzpatrick Starting Quarterback

Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien wasted no time in naming his starting quarterback.  On Tuesday, O’Brien announced that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has won the job.

He’s a guy that earned the job,” O’Brien told reporters after Houston’s minicamp session.

The announcement comes as no surprise, but coaches do often delay making an announcement until the camp competition plays out to some degree.

Fitzpatrick’s main opposition was likely fourth-round pick QB Tom Savage.  Savage has a big arm and has the ability to be the pocket-style quarterback O’Brien has thrived with, but the rookie’s adjustment period will likely be protracted as he attended three different schools with different systems.

Houston has QB Case Keenum and QB T.J. Yates in camp as well, but neither has showed the ability to be anything other than an emergency quarterback.

Fitzpatrick spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, appearing in eleven games.  He tallied 2,454 yards, along with 14 touchdowns, and twelve interceptions.
