Texans OLB Whitney Mercilus Out For Season With Torn Pectoral

The Houston Texans have lost OLB Whitney Mercilus for the season with a torn pectoral that will require surgery and lead to him being placed on injured reserve in the coming days, according to Mark Berman.

Houston’s defense got hit really hard Sunday night, as they also lost DE J.J. Watt to a season-ending tibial plateau fracture.

Mercilus, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Texans back in 2012. He’s currently in the third year of his five-year, $27.431 million contract that included $10.8 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $4.5 million and $4.75 million over the next two years of the agreement.

Entering today’s game, Mercilus had appeared in four games for the Texans and recorded 10 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 edge rusher out of 104 qualifying players.
