Texans Planning To Release QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets Interested?

Update:

Manish Mehta reports that the Jets are planning to pursue QB Ryan Fitzpatrick when he’s made available.

Numerous reports have confirmed that the Texans are signing both Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer to contracts, which leaves last year’s starter Ryan Fitzpatrick in a strange situation.

It seems very unlikely that Houston would elect to keep all three of them on their roster, and some have speculated in recent weeks that Fitzpatrick could be available for trade.

However, Ian Rapoport mentions that the Texans plan to release Fitzpatrick in the coming days.

Fitzpatrick, 32, still has one year remaining on his two-year, $7.5 million contract and would make a base salary of $3.25 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Fitzpatrick would free up $3,250,000 in available cap space while creating $625,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Fitzpatrick threw for 2,483 yards while completing 63.1 percent of his passes to go along with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 12 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
