Texans Prefer Khalil Mack To Jadeveon Clowney At No. 1 Overall?

Peter King of MMQB.com spoke with a friend of Texans GM Rick Smith who mentioned that Smith actually prefers Buffalo LB Khalil Mack to South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney.

King believes the Texans will go with a “more sure thing” at the top of the draft instead of a quarterback.

According to King, Auburn OT Greg Robinson could be a surprise candidate to watch.

Should Mack come off the board first, he would be the second straight player taken from the Mid-American Conference after the Chiefs selected Eric Fisher out of Central Michigan last year.

It appears as though a number of teams in need of help at quarterback are willing to target other positions and address their quarterback situation later on.

The overall consensus has been that the Texans will draft Clowney at No. 1, but there is no question that Mack is one of the most impressive players in this year’s draft class.

Mike Mayock of the NFL Network mentioned months ago that he would take Mack over Clowney, so there has been at some support for the idea in the past.

For what it’s worth, we have the Texans taking Clowney at No. 1 overall in our most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft.
