Texans QB Ryan Mallett Out For The Season

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle has been told that QB Ryan Mallett is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

• Ian Rapoport of NFL Media has already confirmed the news and adds that Mallett could have returned had he suffered the injury earlier in the year.

This comes just a day after McClain reported that Mallett could miss “several weeks” after he sustained the injury before Sunday’s game against the Bengals.

Mallett was able to play through the injury, but struggled throughout the game as he completed 21-of-45 throws for 189 yards and an interception.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will takeover as the team’s starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2014 season.

Mallett, 26, came over from New England in a trade that sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Patriots in return for him. He is in the final year of his four-year, $2,947,828 rookie and will make a base salary of $776,976 for the 2014 season before testing the open market next year.

Given what Mallett had at stake with this opportunity, you really have to feel for him. There should still be interest in him next March, but it’s hard to imagine anyone signing him to be their Week 1 starter next season.
