Texans Sign Derek Newton To A Five-Year, $26.5M Deal

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Texans have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with OT Derek Newton.

Contract Details:

  • Newton receives a five-year deal worth $26.5 million with $10 million guaranteed. (Ian Rapoport)
  • He’ll make $13.75 million in the first two years of the agreement and $17 million after year three. (Ian Rapoport)

This contract leaves Newton in the top-five right tackles for total guarantees, according to OverTheCap.com.

Ganguli reported a few hours ago that the Texans were in “active negotiations” with Newton and it was “very possible” that he would be back in Houston next year.

The Washington Redskins were expected to be among the interested teams in Newton, but it looks like Texans stepped up to the plate before he could begin meeting with prospective teams.

Mike Garafolo mentions that you can expect to see “big numbers” in Newton’s new contract.

Newton, 27, is a former seventh-round pick of the Texans back in 2011. He has played out his four-year $2,100,256 contract that included just $60,256 guaranteed.

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games for the Texans. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 19 offensive tackle out of 84 qualifying players.

We had Newton listed as the No. 33 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
