Texans Release QB Brian Hoyer

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Texans are releasing veteran QB Brian Hoyer.

  • Rapoport adds the Texans were searching for trade involving Hoyer, but ultimately weren’t able to find a trade partner.
  • Jason La Canfora reports the Steelers are among the teams interested in Hoyer.

This shouldn’t come as a major surprising, seeing as previous reports had said that Houston and Hoyer were “headed for a divorce.“,

Houston signed Brock Osweiler to a big-money deal at the start of free agency, so all indications have been that Hoyer was done with the Texans.

It is worth mentioning that  Jason Cole of B/R, citing multiple NFL sources, said that the Jets have expressed interest in Hoyer and that they were waiting to see what progressed between him and Houston before exploring their options.

Now that Hoyer has been released by the Texans, the Jets could be considered a top candidate to sign him.

Hoyer, 30, signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract that included $4.75 million guaranteed with the Texans last year. He was set to make a base salary of $5.25 million in 2016.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Hoyer created $4,859,375 in available cap space.

In 2015, Hoyer appeared in 11 games and accumulated 2,606 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, one interception and completed 60.7 percent of his passes. Pro Football Focus rated Hoyer as the No. 31 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.

We’ll provide more information regarding Hoyer and his possible market as the news becomes available.
