Texans Sign CB Johnathan Joseph To A Three-Year, $22M Deal

Mark Berman of FOX 26 in Houston reports that the Texans have signed veteran CB Johnathan Joseph to a contract extension on Thursday.

  • John McClain reports that Joseph’s new contract extension is worth $22 million and includes with $11.5 million guaranteed.
  • McClain adds that Joseph’s cap figure for the 2015 season will be $11.75 million, which is down from his previous figures of $12.25 million.
  • Joseph will make a base salary of $7 million in 2015 and $6.5 million in 2016 and 2017, according to McClain.
  • The agreement includes $500,000 in 46-man roster bonuses in each of the three years, per McClain.

There were rumors from earlier in the offseason that Joseph could potential be made available for trade. However, it appears as though the Texans view him as an important enough player in their secondary to give him a multi-year commitment.

Joseph, 31, was entering the final year of his five-year, $48.75 million contract that included $23.5 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $8.5 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Joseph appeared in all 16 games for the Texans and recorded 75 tackles, two interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, two forced fumbles, two recoveries and 11 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.
