Texans Signing Veteran QB Josh Johnson, Cut QB Matt McGloin & DL Kendall Langford

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Texans are signing veteran QB Josh Johnson to a contract on Tuesday and waiving QB Matt McGloin.

  • The Texans announced that they’ve also released DT Kendall Langford.

This is interesting, considering that a report from last week mentioned that Johnson was expected to sign with the Colts.

Houston was in need of quarterback depth after losing Deshaun Watson for the season, so they brought in McGloin, who has worked previously with HC Bill O’Brien and signed T.J. Yates to backup Tom Savage.

Johnson, 31, is a former fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2012. Since then, Johnson has played for a number of teams including the 49ers, Browns, Bengals, Chargers, Jets, Colts and most recently for the Bills.

The Ravens signed him to a contract back in May of last year before cutting him loose coming out of the preseason. Johnson later caught on with the Giants but was once again released at the start of the regular season.

Johnson hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2013 season while playing for the Bengals.

McGloin, 27, wound up signing on with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State back in 2013. He surprisingly has managed to make the 53-man roster each year since entering the league and returned to the Raiders last year on a one-year, $2.553 million restricted deal.

As an unrestricted free agent, McGloin signed a one-year contract with the Eagles but was unfortunately on their final roster cuts coming out of the preseason. Houston signed him to a contract last week.

In 2016, McGloin completed 8 of 15 passing attempts (53.3) for 50 yards passing and no touchdowns or interceptions.

Langford, 31, is a former third-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2008. He spent four years in Miami and played three seasons for the Rams before signing a four-year, $17.2 million contract with the Colts back in 2015.

Langford was set to make base salaries of $4 million (2017) and $4.2 million (2018) over the remainder of the contract when the Colts released him with a failed physical back in August.

The Saints signed him to a contract and bounced on and off their active roster before signing on with the Texans a few weeks ago.

In 2016, Langford appeared in eight games for the Colts and recorded 10 tackles, no sacks, a fumble recovery and two pass defenses.
