Texans Targeting Both Brian Hoyer & Ryan Mallett

After speaking to sources around the NFL, John McClaim of the Houston Chronicle mentions that “it’s become pretty clear” that the Texans want to sign both Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer.

According to McClain, the Texans have made progress with Mallett on an extension and could be closing in on deal after the two sides met Sunday.

McClain mentions that the plan appears to be to target Mallett first, and then turn their attention to signing Hoyer.

Texans HC Bill O’Brien is familiar with both quarterbacks from his time in New England, so there’s an obvious connection here.

It would be interesting to see what they would do with Ryan Fitzpatrick, as some have said that Houston could make him available for trade if they add a few quarterbacks.

Hoyer, 29, played out his two-year, $1.965 million contract that includes $250,000 guaranteed and is one of the better available players in a limited free agent class of quarterbacks.

Over the course of 14 games, Hoyer has thrown for 3,334 yards while completing 55.4 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 35 quarterback out of 39 players.

Mallett, 26, came over from New England in a trade that sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Patriots in return for him. He played out his four-year, $2,947,828 rookie and will make a base salary of $776,976 for the 2014 season.

In 2014, Mallett appeared in three games and threw for 400 yards while completing 54.7 percent of his passes to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
