Texans Thinking About Keeping QB Matt Schaub?

Accrording to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are “thinking about” keeping QB Matt Schaub.

  • However, McClain adds that he would be “stunned” if Houston elected to keep Schaub.

McClain also threw some water on the idea of the Texans pursuing Matt Cassel in free agency.

“I’ve been stunned before and I’ll be stunned again but I’ll be stunned if Texans sign Matt Cassel despite multiple reports to the contrary,” McClain tweets.

  • Ian Rapoport reported that the Houston Texans have “real” interest in signing Cassel earlier this morning.

McClain also mentions that the Texans are considering a number of veteran quarterback options that would likely back up a first-round pick.

  • McClain adds that Houston could sign as many as two veteran quarterbacks this offseason.

As for the idea of possibly keeping Schaub, he still has three years remaining on his five-year, $66.15 million contract. The Texans owe him a base salary of $10 million to go along with $1 million in per-game roster bonuses next season.

It’s been widely assumed that the Texans would try to get out from underneath Schaub’s $14.125 million cap figure and take the savings, even though they would free up just $3.625 million by releasing him, according to OverTheCap.com.

Schaub, 32, appeared in 10 games for the Texans last season and threw for 2,310 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Schaub and the Texans as the news is available.
