Texans Waive OL David Quessenberry With Non-Football Injury Designation

Update:

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Texans actually restructured OL David Quessenberry‘s contract back in April to include a full salary split.

  • Yates adds that if/when Quessenberry lands on the Texans’ NFI list, he stands to make a base salary of $333,000 in 2016.

Texans HC Bill O’Brien confirmed that they have waived OL David Quessenberry with the intention of placing him on the non-football injury list after clearing waivers.

According to O’Brien, they felt that Quessenberry wouldn’t be ready from a health standpoint this season. However, they’re hoping to have him back in 2017.

We believed he wasn’t going to be ready from a health standpoint to adequately compete this year,” O’Brien said of the move.

O’Brien did, however, say that Quessenberry didn’t suffer a setback medically.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody that’s been out four years (and returned), but if anyone can do it, it’s David Quessenberry,” O’Brien, per Tania Ganguli.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Texans have waived OL David Quessenberry with a Non-Football injury designation on Tuesday.

Should Quessenberry clear waivers, he would revert to the team’s non-football injury list.

Quessenberry was diagnosed with a life-threatening form lymphoma back in June of 2014. It was reported that Quessenberry had completed his radiation treatments in February of last year and was in remission.

Both Quessenberry and the Texans were hoping he could return to the field in 2015, but they later elected to place him on the reserve/NFI list at the start of the season.

A few weeks ago, Quessenberry said that he was still hoping to resume his career in 2016.

“I’m very happy about how everything is going,” Quessenberry said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I feel great.

Quessenberry, 25, is a former sixth-round pick of the Texans back in 2013. He’s in the final year of his four-year, $2.273 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $675,000 for the 2016 season.

Quessenberry has unfortunately never appeared in an NFL game, due to the battle he’s been up against.
