Texans Signing QB T.J. Yates

Update:

Mark Berman of FOX 26 Houston reports that the Texans are, in fact, signing T.J. Yates to backup Brian Hoyer now that they’ve released Ryan Mallett.

Tania Ganguli of ESPN reports that the Texans are working to bring back T.J. Yates as their backup to starting QB Brian Hoyer.

The Texans elected to release Ryan Mallett after he missed their charter to Miami this past weekend, so they are clearly in need of another quarterback.

Yates, 28, is a former fifth-round pick of the Texans back in 2011. He lasted over three years in Houston before he was traded to the Falcons in a deal that sent ILB Akeem Dent to the Texans.

The Falcons ultimately released Yates during their roster cuts at the start of the season, and there hasn’t been much reported interest in him since then.

Last year, Yates wound up appearing in just one game for the Falcons last year and threw for 64 yards and an interception.
