Texans WR Andre Johnson Skipping Mandatory Minicamp

Texans WR Andre Johnson won’t be attendance for the team’s mandatory minicamp, which kicks off on Tuesday, according to his adviser and uncle Andre Melton.

Johnson reportedly “remains at odds” with the Texans regarding his current situation with the team.

“Right now, that’s all that he can do,” Melton said, via the Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle. “We’ve done what we can do, so we’re just sitting there waiting.

Johnson has expressed his frustrations with the current state of team, which led to plenty of speculation that he could request a trade out of Houston. According to Melton, Johnson doesn’t have any issues with new HC Bill O’Brien, but he intends to evaluate his situation in the coming months.

“We’ll evaluate it in a month or so and see what’s going on,” Melton said.

His salary limits the number of teams that could actually afford to take on his contract. Most of the teams with a lot of space are currently in the rebuilding process while only a few contenders could actually afford to bring him in.

As of now, that list includes the BengalsEaglesPackers, and Colts as the only teams who could currently take on his contract and possibly give him a chance to compete for a title. However, most of these teams have already address the receiver position.

It seems likely that Johnson will eventually report to the team, but this is certainly a situation we’ll be monitoring in the coming weeks.

Johnson, 32, still has three years remaining on his seven-year, $62.7 million contract. He’s set to make $6.5 million for the 2014 season before his base salary increases to $10.5 million in 2015.

In 2013, Johnson caught 109 passes for 1,407 yards receiving and five touchdowns.
