Texans Trying To Hammer Out Contract With G Brandon Brooks

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports that the Texans are “actively trying to hammer out a new contract” for free agent G Brandon Brooks.

  • According to Wilson, Houston is also trying to re-sign C Ben Jones, but he isn’t expected to come at as high of a price.

Tania Ganguli of ESPN previously reported that the Texans were planning to prioritize re-signing Brooks before the start of free agency, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

On Thursday, the Texans freed up a bunch of cap space after they released veterans RB Arian Foster, TE Garrett Graham and S Rahim Moore, which should give them plenty of room to make a competitive offer to Brooks.

Brooks’ agent, Joe Panos, confirmed that this is the sense he’s gotten from the Texans, and expects to exchange proposals in the coming days.

“I met with Houston and they most definitely said he was a priority,” Panos said. “In the next couple days we’ll trade proposals.”

Brooks, 26, finished out his rookie contract with the Texans and is now in position to cash in big time as one of the best interior offensive lineman in this year’s free agent class.

In 2015, Brooks appeared in 14 games for the Texans and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 37 guard out of 81 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
