Sean Leahy of USA Today posted an article today discussing the growing number of NFL teams facing blackouts this season. There were a number of teams that were dealing with blackouts last season but only five NFL teams ended up having their home games blacked out: the Lions, Chiefs, Raiders, Jaguars and Rams.
The season is shaping up to be no different from last year and possibly worse. Right now, there are eleven NFL teams, including three playoff teams: San Diego, Arizona, and Cincinnati, facing possible blackouts.
While there are growing number of teams having trouble selling out their home games, popular organizations such as: Pittsburgh, Chicago, Dallas, Green Bay, San Francisco, Miami, Washington have already sold-out their home games.
Last season teams who struggled to sell their tickets took advantage of an option that let them purchase the remaining tickets at a discount so that their home games could be aired. One team in particular was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who have already said that they will not do the same thing this season.
With the increasing number of teams who are unable to sell tickets to their games, the NFL will be forced to make changes to the blackout rules in the near future. No longer is the NFL experience worth the money that it costs to attend a game in person when you could save the money and watch all of the games, with your friends while in the comfort of your home.
The NFL needs to take action before the underdeveloped markets like Jacksonville and Carolina become football ghost towns.
