The Plaxico Burress Market By Teams

We’ve known for a while now that Plaxico Burress was going to be a hot topic once he was released from prison and that has more than proven to be the case. Here’s a look at some of the teams will have to give Burress a long look.

Philadelphia Eagles

So far the Eagles are the favorites of many NFL pundits. You can see the logic here. The Eagles have a number of solid wide receivers but they’re all 6 foot and under. Burress would give Michael Vick a large option to through to down in the red zone.

Michael Lombardi of NFL.com offers a contrasting view on the idea by mentioning that “they have big time playmakers and love Riley Cooper. Makes no sense to me.”

Philly currently has DeShawn Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and Riley Cooper which gives them a solid group of targets but if they can get Burress for relatively cheap, I could see it happening.

St Louis Rams

For my money, I’d say that the St Louis Rams are the team to watch. Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was the offensive coordinator for the Giants during Burress last season with the team and St Louis has been actively pursuing wide receiver options to pair with Sam Bradford. The Rams we’re in on Vincent Jackson last season and they also considered claiming Randy Moss when he was put on waivers last year.

Tony Softli’s sees it as an enticing idea for the team to consider.

Chicago Bears

Another team that is in need of a big-play wide receiver is the Chicago Bears. Right now they have a group of receivers that includes some burners, Devin Hester and Johnny Knox, as well as a decent possession receiver in Earl Bennett but they are without a “go-to” guy that can round out their passing game.

It would be hard to imagine that Burress can show up and produce the way he did in 2008 but the Bears should be willing to take a chance on him if he shows interest in joining them.

New York Jets

Several people have speculated that the Jets could be a strong candidate for Burress but that would require them to lose two of Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, and Brad Smith and still get Burress for cheap. New York has committed a lot of money to their “core” players which leaves them in an interesting predicament with their free agent to be receivers.

Miami Dolphins

Miami Herald columnist Armando Salguero reports that the Dolphins are “absolutely not” interested in signing Burress just in case you were a Dolphins fan that was hoping to add him.

Other speculative options would include the, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans and the Minnesota Vikings.
