Giants Considering All Options In Regards To DE Osi Umenyiora

New York Giants GM Jerry Reese would still like to have DE Osi Umenyiora back with the team next season, but he also mentioned that he’s keeping their options “open.”

Our goal is to have Osi play football with the New York Giants and retire as a Giant,” said Reese, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “That is what we would like to do first. All of our options are open as I have said before but Osi makes us a better football team, I do know that.”

This will continue to carry on throughout the offseason and training camp, but it would be surprising to see a team step up and offer a reasonable deal to the Giants in return for Umenyiora. Things can obviously change with injuries and such, but a holdout still seems like a possibility at some point.

New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora is under the impression that GM Jerry Reese is trying to paint him as a “greedy pig” in regards to his contract demands.

Last year I was offered incentives. This year they offered me in guaranteed money, HALF of what they just gave Kiwi guaranteed. HALF,” Umenyiora wrote in an email to the New York Daily News. “I’m not making that up. Then Jerry tells the world they offered me an extension and I turned it down. And I look like a greedy pig for turning it down. Hilarious.

Reese mentioned over the weekend that they had offered Umenyiora a contract extension each of the past two years, but Umenyiora believes that both were less than fair offers. There were reports leading up to the draft that the Giants were shopping Umenyiora and the Titans were mentioned as a speculative option, but the fact that nothing got done before or during the draft implies that there’s probably not going to be a deal coming in the future. At this point in time, Umenyiora figures to be a possible holdout candidate in the coming months.
