According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, there have been some “whispers” that the 49ers might be one of the teams interested trading for QB Johnny Manziel.

Cabot believes the Browns should try to package Manziel as part of a deal for 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, whom they’re reported considering as a trade option along with the Broncos and Jets.

Cabot points to some comments previously made by new Chip Kelly a while back in which he said he said his offense is “tailor-made” for Manziel.

When I coached at Oregon he was tailor-made for (the offense),” Kelly said. “He broke my heart. I love the kid. I think he’s a hell of a football player.”

The Browns are holding out hope of securing a draft pick for Manziel before they place him on waivers.

Earlier in the day, Cabot reported that there are as many as three teams who may have interest in Manziel, which explains why the team is waiting to cut him.

Yesterday, Aditi Kinkhabwala reported that the Browns plan to waive Manziel at some point this week.

Manziel, 23, is in the second year of his four-year, $8,247,250 rookie contract that included $6,702,625 guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $794,936 this season and another $1,169,872 in 2016.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Manziel would free up $90,127 in available cap space while creating $2,159,490 in dead money.

This season, Manziel appeared in nine games and thrown for 1,500 yards while completing 57.8 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Manziel has also ran for 230 yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Manziel as the news is available.
