Titans Fire HC Ken Whisenhunt, Promote Mike Mularkey

Update:

Ken Whisenhunt has released a statement regarding the Titans’ decision to relieve him of his duties.

The Tennessee Titans announced Tuesday that they’ve fired HC Ken Whisenhunt.

After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties,” said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. “We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction. I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward.”

The Titans have promoted assistant head coach/tight ends coach Mike Mularkey to interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Ian Rapoport reports that this was an ownership decision, and the team’s loss to the Texans ultimately sealed Whisenhunt’s fate.

On Monday, Whisenhunt was asked about fan unrest and his team’s struggles, but said: “I’m operating from a position here where I don’t have much I can say.

“Our win-loss total is not good, so no matter what I say, it’s not going to be good enough. All I can do is tell you we’re going to work hard to swing it hard the other way,’’ Whisenhunt said. “We’re in here working. We’re trying. We feel like we’ve done some things that have been good, but they’re obviously not good enough.”

The Titans are currently on a six-game losing streak, and there had been talk Whisenhunt’s time in Tennessee could be coming to an end.

Some speculation from earlier in the day suggested that the Titans’ job could be appealing to some head coaches around the league now that they have a solid young quarterback in Marcus Mariota in place.

Whisenhunt lasted less than three years in Tennessee and led the team to a 3-20 record during this time.
