Titans Likely To Pass On A QB At No. 2 Overall?

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, “early indications” are that the Titans are leaning towards pass on taking a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick, and instead move forward with Zach Mettenberger.

Titans GM Ruston Webster has offered support for Mettenberger, but they still plan to evaluate both Florida State QB Jameis Winston and Oregon QB Marcus Mariota in the coming months.

We like Zach, and I think Zach has the tools to play and start in the league,” Webster said. “We’ve said all along that this is a part of this process, and we have to do our due diligence all the way through. Zach knows we are going to do that, and this is just kind of part of it.

“These guys are part of the evaluation process along with other positions. And we’ll take a good look at them.

Webster stressed that they are considering other players at positions other than quarterback for their first-round selection.

There’s also some other players involved, too,” Webster said. “There’s going to be good defensive players, good receivers, and where do those other guys fit in? Really, the (second overall pick) is not all about the quarterbacks. A lot of other positions are involved, too.”

If the Titans do, in fact, decide that they’re better addressing another position, a market could develop among teams interested in moving up for the No. 2 overall pick.

In 2014, Mettenberger threw for 1,412 yards while completing 59.8 percent of his passes to go along with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions over the course of seven games.

Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 22 quarterback in the league out of 39 qualifying players, which happens to be tied with Lions QB Matthew Stafford.
