Tomlin Not Guaranteeing Roethlisberger The Starting Job?

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced yesterday that Dennis Dixon will be the teams starting quarterback to begin the season.

Tomlin was confronted today by Adam Schein and Rich Gannon of Sirius NFL Radio about his intentions for Ben Roethlisberger when he returns from his four-game suspension.

“I’m going to dodge that one and not artfully,” Tomlin told Sirius NFL Radio (via Sean Leahy of USAToday.com).  “I’m not going to back myself in a corner.”

To Tomlin’s credit, he deflected what would have been a guaranteed quarterback controversy upon Roethlisbergers return to the Steelers. Had Dixon won all four of the Steeler’s games, Tomlin would face plenty of criticism about making a quarterback change after a fast start. By dodging the question he’ll be able to make the best decision for the team without going against his previous intentions.

Roethlisberger will most likely start when he returns to the Steelers but Dixon will have an opportunity to make his case for being the teams starting QB.
