Tony Gonzalez Was Hoping To Be Traded Before The Deadline?

Earlier today, we posted some comments from future Hall of Fame TE Tony Gonzalez regarding his opinion of QB Matt Ryan as well the possibility that he could return for a stretch run next season.

The excerpts came from Seth Wickersham’s of ESPN The Magazine article in which he followed Gonzalez throughout the 2013 season.

More details (via Pro Football Talk) from Wickersham’s article are now coming out and it appears as though Gonzalez was hoping to be traded ahead of the 2013 trade deadline.

Apparently, Packers S Morgan Burnett yelled, “F–k you!  You ain’t sh-t!” to Gonzalez without any of his Falcon teammates standing up for him. It was at this point that Gonzalez decided he was done with the Falcons.

Gonzalez supposedly knew that he couldn’t request a trade out of Atlanta the same way he done years go while he was with the Chiefs, but he was reportedly hoping that the Falcons would elect to trade him to either the Seahawks or the Chiefs before the deadline.

The hardest thing next year will be watching games knowing that I could play at a Pro Bowl level,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez, 37, is coming off of another solid season in which he totaled 83 receptions for 859 yards and 8 touchdowns for the Falcons. He has only missed three games in his entire 15-year-career, which is really amazing when you consider the number of hits he’s taken over the years.

The Falcons hold the rights to Gonzalez, which means they would have to release him and then he would have to pass through waivers before he could sign with a team of his choosing. All things considered, it seems unlikely that Gonzalez will at least be back in Atlanta next season.
