Tony Romo & Philip Rivers Could Be Made Available For Trade?

Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report spoken with several team officials who believe Cowboys QB Tony Romo and Chargers QB Philip Rivers could be traded at some point.

Freeman lists the Jets, Browns, Bears and 49ers as teams in desperate need of a quarterback among others.

A team official mentioned that the Cowboys could secure a mid-round pick for Romo “but not much more because of his injury history and age.”

As for Rivers, Freeman’s source mentioned that San Diego should be able to net a second- or third-round for their quarterback.

There are some issues that could prevent a trade like the fact that Rivers has a no-trade clause in his contract and the salary cap ramifications of trading either player. However, Freeman believes those things can be worked out if there’s serious interest from other teams.

Of the two players, Romo is clearly the most likely to be traded just for the simple fact that they have a long-term quarterback option in Dak Prescott.

Romo, 36, is in the third year of his seven-year, $119.5 million contract that included $55 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $8.5 million (2016), $14 million (2017), $19.5 million (2018) and $20.5 million (2019).

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Romo would free up $5,100,000 million in available cap space next year while creating $19,600,000 in dead money.

In 2015, Romo threw for 884 yards while completing 68.6 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and seven interceptions over the course of four games for the Cowboys.

Rivers, 34, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004 but was traded to the Chargers in return for QB Eli Manning. He’s currently in the second year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $16.5 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Rivers would free up $2 million in available cap space next year while creating $18 in dead money.

In 2016, Rivers has appeared in six games and throw for 1,647 while completing 67.2 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding potential trades involving either quarterback as the news is available.
