Tony Romo Unlikely To Return To Practice After Cowboys’ Bye, DAL May Not Need To Make Decision Until Week 10

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Cowboys QB Tony Romo has made “considerable” progress in his return from a back injury he sustained during the preseason. However, Romo has still yet to be cleared to practice in full.

According to La Canfora, Romo could require another MRI before returning to the practice field but the expectation is that he likely need more time to heal, even though tests have shown he’s on scheduled in terms of the healing in his back .

La Canfora mentions that even if Romo was to receive clearance next week, he’s still unlikely to suit up for their Week 9’s game following their bye. Beyond that, sources have told La Canfora that the Cowboys man not even have him active as the team’s backup to Dak Prescott.

Dallas is clearly putting off making a decision about who will be the team’s starter when Romo is healthy, but it’s getting very hard to justify sending Prescott back to the bench with the way the team has been playing.

La Canfora pegs Week 10 as the earliest point in which Dallas will have to decide on Romo returning as the team’s starter or not.

Romo, 36, is in the third year of his seven-year, $119.5 million contract that included $55 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $8.5 million (2016), $14 million (2017), $19.5 million (2018) and $20.5 million (2019).

In 2015, Romo threw for 884 yards while completing 68.6 percent of his passes to go along with five touchdowns and seven interceptions over the course of four games for the Cowboys.

We’ll have more regarding Romo and his return as the news is available.
