Tre Mason’s Mom Says He Has A “10-Year-Old’s Mindset” From Head Injuries

Tina Mason, the mother of Rams RB Tre Mason, told Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies last month that her son has a “10-year-old’s mindset”  due to head injuries he suffered during his football career.

Tre is not himself at all,” Mason said on audio recorded from a PBSO dashboard-camera video recorded on July 27, during an incident in which her son fled from police while riding an ATV, via the Palm Beach Post. “He’s not making good decisions.

An officer tells Tina Mason that her son should be playing football, but she doesn’t believe that’s what’s best for her son.

No, actually he shouldn’t. … ,” Tina Mason responded. “There’s CTE and this head-injury thing. You can say he should be playing football, but this is not what it is.

As much as he’s accomplished, as hard as he’s worked, as much as he’s built his character, in record-breaking time it’s going downhill because of what’s going on,” Mason added. “He doesn’t even know. He’s not conscious enough.”

Mason has had numerous off-the-field incidents and his family is clearly concerned about his mental health.

A month ago, WPBF Florida managed to catch up to Mason and ask him if he plans to report to the Rams for training camp, to which he shouted “No!”

Mason was located at his mother’s home in Lake Worth, and has reportedly been seen practicing drills in his front yard.

Rams officials said previously that they’ve attempted to contact Mason several times without success. Los Angeles has spoken to Mason’s family and his agent, Bus Cook, but haven’t been able to get any answers about his condition or his whereabouts.

Right now, we’re more concerned with Tre Mason’s well-being than we are his football career,” Rams HC Jeff Fisher told reporters last weekend. “We’re going to continue to try to reach him to see where he’s at.”

The Rams officially placed Mason on the Reserve/Did Not Report list Saturday.

Mason, 22, is a former third-round pick of the Rams back in 2014. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2,980,938 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $641,146 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Mason appeared in 13 games for the Rams and ran for 207 yards on 75 carries (2.8 YPC) to go along with 18 receptions for 88 yards receiving and one total touchdown.

We’ll have more regarding Mason as the news is available.
