Tyrann Mathieu Looking For Around $11M Per Year?

According to Jason La Canfora, the cost to sign free agent DB Tyrann Mathieu likely to cost a team around $11 million per year, if he’s able to get his desired sum.

La Canfora adds that the same goes for Seahawks S Earl Thomas, who’s reportedly available for trade (NFLTR) right now.

Here’s a collection of reports related to Mathieu since he became available:

  • According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are “seriously interested” Mathieu along with a number of other teams.
  • According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the Giants are a team to watch for Mathieu. Raanan points out that there’s an obvious connection between Mathieu and the Giants, given that New York hired former Cardinals DC James Bettcher to run their defense.

Mathieu, 25, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2013. He was entering the third year of his five-year, $64.1 million contract that included $35 million guaranteed and set to make base salaries of $4.75 million and $5.75 million over the next two years of his contract when the Cardinals released him.

In 2017, Mathieu appeared in all 16 games and recorded 78 tackles, a sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble and seven pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 61 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 50 Available 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
