Tyrann Mathieu Open To Re-Signing With Texans

Texans S Tyrann Mathieu said Friday that he would “most definitely” consider re-signing with Houston next year.

Yeah, most definitely,” Mathieu said. “Obviously, just really trying to finish this season off strong, keep doing what I’ve been doing once I got here, keep that chip on my shoulder and then try my best to continue to make everybody around me better. Until that day comes, we will focus on that, but for right now, it looks like I’m a Texan.”

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle writes that it will be months before the Texans and Mathieu open extension talks, but a “lengthy deal” is the expected outcome.

Mathieu explained that he wanted to sign with a team he was comfortable playing for and believes signing with the Texans was the “right decision” for him.

“I think, ultimately, I tried to come to a team where obviously I felt comfortable,” Mathieu said. “I wanted to come to a team where guys wanted to play football, love football and ultimately, I feel like I made the right decision.

Mathieu, 26, is a former third-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2013. He was entering the third year of his five-year, $64.1 million contract that included $35 million guaranteed when the Cardinals released him back in March.

The Texans later signed Mathieu one-year contract worth $7 million to go along with incentives.

In 2018, Mathieu has appeared in 10 games for the Texans and recorded 61 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and five pass defense.
