University of Michigan Offered Jim Harbaugh A Six-Year, $48M Deal

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the University of Michigan made another attempt to lure 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh back to the college game.

  • According to Rapoport, Michigan has offered him a staggering six-year, $48 million contract to coach the team.
  • Pro Football Talk mentions that the level of interest in Harbaugh likely shifts leverage to him in any trade situation.

Adam Schefter, citing a person familiar with Harbaugh’s thinking, reports that he is at least “considering it.”

A separate source tells Schefter that while it was possible Harbaugh could wind up at Michigan, “it was not likely.”

For comparisons sake, Alabama head coach Nick Saban is the highest paid coach in college football with a salary of $6.9 million. If these figures are accurate, Harbaugh would be takeover as the highest paid coach in the college game.

Numerous reports have mentions that Harbaugh prefers to stay in the NFL as it doesn’t require him to recruit players and travel around the country.

However, Mike Garafolo reports that Harbaugh has recently changed his mind about the idea coaching at his alma mater.

The Raiders, Dolphins and Jets have all come up as potential options for Harbaugh next year, but they would obviously have to part with draft compensation and then sign him to a long-term extension.

We’ll have more updates as the news is available.
