Update on Saints RB Search

Yesterday we discussed the Saints options to replace injured running back Lynell Hamilton.  This morning, ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas weighed in the situation by offering some new suggestions for the Saints backfield.

He mentions that Hamilton’s was likely to be a short-yardage back and that the team may look at P.J. Hill or rookie Chris Ivory to replace him. The Saints did bring in Ladell Betts for a workout last week so he too remains a possibility. Since there really isn’t a solid option on the market right the Saints could let the rest of the preseason play out and look to add a bigger back that gets let go.

Pro Football Talk mentions that the Saints had interest in signing either Justin Fargas or Jamal Lewis to be their No. 3 running back this season but decided to stick with Lynell Hamilton instead. Now with the injury to Hamilton the Saints are forced to find a contributing back as soon as possible.

We mentioned earlier that Brian Westbrook could be a option for the Saints backfield but he has expressed his unwillingness to play on turf. PFT mentions that New Orleans may look to bring in Jamal Lewis in the next few days given their previous interest in the veteran.
