Veteran WR Roddy White Has Received Offers, Wants To Play For Contender Or He’ll Retire

Former Falcons WR Roddy White says he has received offers from teams and could playing right now, but he wants to play for a contender.

“When my agent and I went down the list and I saw the teams that really needed wide receivers, I was like, ‘Wow, I really don’t want to go there,’” White said, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “I knew I couldn’t win with any of those teams. At this point of my career, I don’t want to be dragging my feet in Week 13 just to have an opportunity to be 4-10 next week.”

White didn’t offer any specifics regarding the teams that have made him offers. However, if he can’t catch on with a contending team, White says he will retire. White also mentioned that there are “maybe six teams” who would fall into the category being a true contender for a Super Bowl title.

White said his plan is to wait until Week 4 or 5 before deciding on his future.

“I’ll let it go into the season, maybe Week 4 or 5,” White said. “If it doesn’t happen, I’ll be putting my cleats on a power line, just like Marshawn Lynch.

In regards to retirement, White says he’s prepared to walk away both mentally and financially.

“I’ve literally prepared myself for it. I’ve talked to my financial adviser and he said I’m fine if I decide to quit,” White added. “But I’ve always played this game to win a Super Bowl. I thought I’d get with the Falcons and we’d win a championship and everything I wanted in my career would be fulfilled. I’ve been on good teams and bad teams, but at this point I don’t have the energy to be on teams that can’t win now.”

White, 34, was entering the third year of his four-year, $30 million contract when the Falcons released him in a move that freed up $2,362,500 in cap space.

In 2015, White appeared in all 16 games for the Falcons and caught 43 passes for 506 yards receiving and a touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 105 receiver out of 119 qualifying players.
