Vikings Have No Plans To Trade QB Christian Ponder During The Draft

Update:

Tom Pelissero, in a later tweet, mentions that Vikings GM Rick Spielman was saying that he has no plans to trade QB Christian Ponder “during the draft.”

This is important given that it at least implies that the Vikings could reconsider the idea at a later point in the year.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman told reporters on Tuesday that they do not have any plans to trade former first-round pick QB Christian Ponder.

“We would not trade Ponder,” said Spielman, per Tom Pelissero.

Spielman was asked why they won’t trade Ponder to which he responded; Because that would leave us with one quarterback.”

Peter King mentioned earlier in the day that he isn’t buying the buzz regarding Blake Bortles being an option for them at No. 8 overall. King adds that the Vikings have “too many quarterbacks rated too closely” for this to be an option.

Another rumor that surfaced on Monday was that the Vikings had spoken to the Rams regarding QB Sam Bradford, but Spielman also shot that idea down.

Minnesota has re-signed Matt Cassel to a two-year contract and decline Ponder’s fifth-year option, so it seems plausible that they could come away with a quarterback in the middle rounds.

Ponder, 25, hasn’t come anywhere the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $1,760,277 for the 2014 season.
