Vikings LB Chad Greenway Could Be On The Chopping Block Next Year

Ben Goessling of ESPN.com believes veteran LB Chad Greenway will have to prove his worth to the Vikings’ new coaching staff this season.

Earlier in the offseason, Greenway agreed to reduce his 2014 salary from $6.5 million to $5.5 million in order remain with the team.

According to Goessling, “Greenway could be looking at another contract restructure or a release if he doesn’t pick things up at age 31 this season.”

It’s worth mentioning that Greenway was playing with broken bone in his wrist, which likely explains at least a portion of his poor tackling last year.

Goessling still expects him to start at weakside linebacker and hold onto the job for much of the season.

Greenway, 31, still has two years remaining on his five-year, $40.6 million contract that incleded $20 million guaranteed. The most significant figure regarding Greenway is most likely his $8.8 million cap figure for the 2015 season.

He appeared in all 16 games last season and totaled 134 tackles and three sacks. Pro Football Focus rated him as the second worst outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense last year.
