Report: Broncos Not Pursuing A Trade For DE Jared Allen

Update:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos are not in on DE Jared Allen.

  • Schefter adds that “options diminishing” for the Vikings with regards to a trade for Allen.

Gil Brandt is “hearing” the Broncos are attempting to trade for Vikings DE Jared Allen.

  • Jason Cole has been informed that the Broncos would need to rework Peyton Manning‘s contract to create the necessary cap room for Jared Allen.
  • Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Seahawks are not one of the teams working on a trade for Allen.
  • Glazer adds that there are two other teams still involved.
  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Browns, Panthers, Bengals, Packers, Jaguars, Dolphins, Eagles, Buccaneers and Titans are teams who could take on Allen’s contract after restructuring his deal.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Seattle Seahawks are making a late push to trade for Vikings DE Jared Allen.

  • Schefter adds that Minnesota is currently in talks with a second team as well.
  • Chris Mortensen reports that the Vikings are looking for a second-round pick in return for Allen, but would be willing to accept a conditional third-round pick.
  • Tom Pelissero reports that Allen is in fact willing to rework his contract to facilitate a trade.
  • Ian Rapoport reports that a Seahawks source has informed him that their interest is “vastly overblown.”

The Seahawks do not have a lot of cap space to work with so they would need to either rework his contract or another player’s deal currently on their roster to make this trade work.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Vikings are “certainly open to fielding offers” for DE Jared Allen.

  • Glazer mentions that they have had a few talks with NFL teams regarding Allen, but nothing substantial has been discussed so far.
  • Glazer adds that the Vikings are “doing more than just listening” to offers for Allen.
  • Glazer believes it’s still a “long shot” for the Vikings to trade Allen due to his contract.

This comes in contrast to a report from Ian Rapoport who mentioned that the Vikings have no interest in trading Allen.

Clearly, there are some mixed signals being leaked to the media regarding Allen’s availability. If Minnesota is in fact open to trading Allen, there is a chance a deal could be completed before the 4pm est deadline.

We have Allen listed as the No. 39 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a source has informed that the Vikings would only receive a fifth-round compensatory pick for DE Jared Allen.

Many expected Minnesota to receive a third-round compensatory selection if Allen were to sign with a new team during the offseason, but that is apparently not the case.

Taking into account what a team could get for compensatory pick is important to determining the asking price of a player. Considering that compensatory picks are handed out at the end of the round, a fifth-round pick is basically a sixth-round selection. With this in mind, the Vikings would have to consider accepting a third or fourth-rounder for Allen if it’s offered.

Although, Ian Rapoport reports that the the Vikings have no interest in trading Allen.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Vikings are willing to trade veteran DE Jared Allen “for the right price.”

  • Glazer adds that Minnesota has discussed the idea to some degree.
  • The Vikings are expected to ask for more than a third-round pick in return for Allen seeing as they would likely get a third-round compensatory pick if Allen departed during free agency.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports expects the Vikings to hold “exploratory talks” about possibly trading DE Jared Allen before Tuesday’s deadline.

The team has yet to field in any offers for Allen, but some GMs around the league believe the Vikings would be foolish to not make some calls around the league to gauge interest in Allen.

La Canfora believes the Broncos and Cowboys could be two teams to watch if Minnesota does in fact shop Allen around the league. Both team play 4-3 base defense, which is an ideal fit for Allen and they are also chasing playoff bids as well.

The problem with this idea is Allen’s currently salary and possible cap restrictions, especially with the Cowboys who currently have a terrible cap situation.

According to La Canfora, the Viking would likely have to eat a large portion of Allen’s salary to make this deal work.

On top of that, you have to wonder what teams would be willing to part with in terms of draft compensation for a veteran defensive end.

Allen, 31, will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. It’s hard to imagine that Allen would re-sign with Minnesota given the current state of franchise. By trading him, they would at least ensure some amount of compensation for their star defensive end, but they could also receive a compensatory pick if they allowed him to depart during free agency.
