Vikings Not Expected To Take A QB At No. 8 Overall?

Vikings GM Rick Spielman tells Peter King of MMQB.com that this year’s group of quarterback prospects is a “mixed bag” and made it sound like they are prepared to wait to address the position.

“That’s a big reason why we made it a high priority to sign Matt Cassel back,” Spielman said. “Every one of these quarterbacks … nothing is a sure thing. There’s no Andrew Luck, no Peyton Manning. It is such a mixed bag with each player—every one of them has positives, every one of them has negatives. And if that’s the way you end up feelings, why don’t you just wait till later in the draft, and take someone with the first pick you’re sure will help you right now?

The Vikings appear to be in a great position take one of the best quarterbacks in this year’s draft class seeing as a number of teams in need of a quarterback at the top of the draft could select impact players at other positions.

Minnesota holds the No. 8 pick which means that if no team takes a quarterback in the top-five, the Buccaneers are the only team ahead of the Vikings that are believed to be considering quarterbacks.

It’s worth mentioning that the Vikings have met with quarterbacks: Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois), Zach Mettenberger (LSU) and Keith Wenning (Ball State).

All of these quarterbacks should be available later in the draft, as there is talk that Brdigewater’s stock is dropping.

We have the Vikings taking Johnny Manziel at No. 8 overall in our most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft, but we may have to change that this week.
