Vikings Placing DT Tom Johnson On Injured Reserve, Sign DT Toby Johnson

The Minnesota Vikings announced Tuesday that they’ve placed DT Tom Johnson on injured reserve and signed DT Toby Johnson to a contract.

Tom Johnson, 32, originally signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss back in 2006. He lasted just over a year with the Colts before eventually catching on with the Saints in 2011.

After three years in New Orleans, Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Vikings.

Johnson is currently in the second year of his three-year, $7 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $2.3 million over the next two years.

In 2016, Johnson appeared in 14 games and recorded 17 tackles, two sacks, an interception and a pass defense for the Vikings.

Toby Johnson, 25, originally signed on with the Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia back in May of last year. He was waived coming out of the preseason and had brief stints with the Jaguars and Bears before joining the Vikings towards the end of the season.

Minnesota elected to bring Johnson back on a futures deal this past January. However, he was once again waived at the start of the season and later signed to their practice squad. The Viking promoted Johnson to their active roster last week before cutting him loose a few days ago.

During his college career at Georgia, Johnson recorded 34 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks and two pass defenses.

Johnson has yet to appear in an NFL game.
