Vikings Could Possibly Look To The Trade Market For A QB?

Ben Gosseling of ESPN.com writes that, depending on what happens at the top of this year’s draft, there is a chance that the Minnesota Vikings could look to the trade market for a quarterback.

According to Gosseling, there is no guarantee that one of the best quarterback prospects in this year’s draft will be available to them at No. 8 overall. With this in mind, Gosseling mentions that the Vikings could consider potential trade options like Redskins backup Kirk Cousins or Ryan Mallett of the Patriots.

Gosseling adds that taking a quarterback in round two could also be an option for them ans lists: Zach Mettenberger (LSU), Derek Carr (Fresno State) and Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) as player who could be available.

Earlier today, a report indicated that the Redskins are looking for a second-round pick for Cousins, but the Vikings would obviously need to be convinced that he’s capable of playing better than he did during a three-game stretch at the end of the last season.

Mallett continually comes up as a potential trade target for quarterback-needy teams, however, very little ever comes of this speculation.

It’s also worth noting that trading for backup quarterbacks hasn’t proven to be a great solution to finding a starting quarterback. Guys like Kevin Kolb and Matt Flynn come to mind as players who wound up being huge failures following a trade.

This could very well be Vikings GM Rick Spielman’s final shot at finding a franchise quarterback, so I’m sure all options are on the table as of now.
