Vikings & RB Latavius Murray Agree To Restructured Contract

Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports that the Vikings and RB Latavius Murray have agreed to a restructured contract.

  • According to Cronin, $5.15 million of Murray’s 2018 salary would have been guaranteed at 4 pm EST Friday had he not agreed to a restructured contract with the Vikings.
  • Field Yates reports that Murray agreed to reduce his 2018 base salary from $5.15M to $3.65M, his roster bonus from $500k to $250k and his incentives from $2.3M to $1M as part of this restructure.
  • Yates adds that the Vikings picked up $1.15 million of cap space by reworking Murray’s deal.
  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports Murray’s salary is now fully guaranteed and the final year of his three-year deal has been eliminated, which will allow him to become a free agent in 2019.

Minnesota could have released Murray and picked up $5 million of cap space before the deadline, which is why he agreed to the restructured contract.

The Vikings are trying to sign free agent DL Sheldon Richardson, so it’s likely they’ll try to use this money to get him under contract.

Murray, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Raiders back in 2013. After four years in Oakland, Murray departed for a three-year, $15 million contract that included $3.4 million guaranteed with the Vikings last year.

Murray stands to make base salaries of $5.15 million and $4.4 million over the next two years of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Murray would free up $5,150,000 of available cap space while creating $1.2 million in dead money.

In 2017, Murray appeared in all 16 games for the Vikings and rushed for 842 yards on 216 carries (3.9 YPC) to go along with 15 receptions for 103 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 26 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
