Vikings Restructure DT Kevin Williams Contract

Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports that the Vikings recently restructured the contract of DT Kevin Williams.

  • Williams will now become a free agent following the season.
  • His 2013 base salary of $7 million has been reduced to $4.9 million, which is fully guaranteed.
  • The Vikings free up $2.5 million in cap space, which leaves them $6.913 million under the cap.

Williams, 32, has been the Vikings best interior defensive lineman for awhile now and is coming off of another solid season. According to Pro Football Focus, Williams was the No. 10 defensive tackle in the league and was effective as both a run-stopper, as well as an interior pass-rusher.

Allowing him to become a free agent following the season makes a lot of sense given that he’ll be 34 at the start of the 2014 season, and the way the market has been playing out, it’s increasingly doubtful that any team will be willing to offer him a deal that would pay him anything close to his current salary. That’s not to say he won’t generate interest next year, but teams are obviously reluctant to pay aging lineman.

We have Urlacher listed as the No. 15 player in our Best Available Free Agents list.
