Vikings Rumors: Harrison Smith, Josh Robinson, Jarius Wright

Safety Postions

Dan Wiederer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that it “won’t be entirely shocking” if the Vikings end up using both Notre Dame rookies as their starting safeties this year.

The Viking traded for Harrison Smith, so figures to be a safe bet to get a starting job. Fifth-round pick Robert Blanton will have to compete with Mistral Raymond and Jamarca Sanford for the strong safety spot, but that’s apparently how Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier wants it to be.

If you take a look at where we ended the season at the safety position, it’s open competition,” said Frazier. “Those guys returning are good players. But we want to really have an open competition.”

Josh Robinson

Leslie Frazier expects to have third-round pick CB Josh Robinson “compete for a starting job” as well.

Not just the nickel position,” Frazier said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “We want him to compete for a starting job.

Frazier also mentioned that he was impressed with Robinson’s return ability.

“(Robinson) caught a punt and he just took off like a guy shot out of a rocket,” said Frazier.

Minnesota obviously drafted these guys to help their secondary in the near future, so it won’t be surprising to see them play decent roles for them next season.

Jarius Wright

Vikings fourth-round pick WR Jarius Wright wound up sitting out the team’s second practice on Friday after “bumping his head,” according to ESPN 1500 Twin Cities.

The drills were supposed to be non-contact, but Wright apparently “became ill” after the incident occurred. Wright did mention that there’s “no real problems with the head,” so it doesn’t appear to be a serious concern.

With that being said, Wright does have a history of injuries, so this is at least something to monitor during the offseason.
