Vikings Sign Third-Round Pick RB Jerick McKinnon

The Minnesota Vikings announced the signing of third-round pick RB Jerick McKinnon of Georgia Southern University.

The Vikings now have all of their 2014 draft picks under contract.

McKinnon’s four-year contract is worth an estimated $2,745,000 and includes a signing bonus of $515,000, according to OverTheCap.com.

McKinnon lined up all over the field in college, spending time at QB, RB, WR and even CB.  He was used in a variety of packages, but was used primarily as a ball-carrier.

Minnesota will likely employ McKinnon in some sub-packages, but he has the potential to win the Vikings No.2 job behind RB Adrian Peterson.  RB Toby Gerhart signed with Jacksonville this offseason, so McKinnon’s primary competition will likely be RB Matt Asiata.  McKinnon could win the job if he proves effective as a pass blocker.

McKinnon ran for 3,899 yards and 42 touchdowns in his collegiate career.  He added 12 passing touchdowns and one receiving.
