Vince Young Wins Backup Job, Packers Cut Graham Harrell

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers are releasing QB Graham Harrell due to Vince Young winning the backup job.

After an impressive preseason showing, Young has comfortably secured the role as the backup plan should anything happen to Aaron Rodgers. The former Titan completed 6 of 7 passes for 41 yards, a touchdown and 39 yards rushing yards during last night’s loss.

The dimension of running, that’s something we really wanted to see (from Young),” said HC Mike McCarthy following Friday’s game. “I think you’re just seeing Vince getting more and more comfortable … I think Vince is one of the players that definitely took advantage of his opportunities tonight.”

Harrell had been touted as Rodgers “future backup” for awhile now, but his continuing struggles during preseason never left the staff comfortable with his overall ability, which was evident by the signing of Young just only a month ago.

Young will now be the No.2 QB on the team’s roster, ahead of B.J. Coleman who could end up on the team’s practice squad in the next few weeks.

  1. Vince Young has been bamboozled, lead astray by the Green Bay Packer coaching staff and GM…. I just hope this didn’t destroy his desire to play the game he love so much…..
