Wade Phillips Would Be Sean McVay’s Top Choice For DC If He Gets Rams’ HC Job

Adam Schefter is reporting that if the Rams hire Redskins OC Sean McVay as their next head coach, his top defensive coordinator option would be to bring in Broncos DC Wade Phillips to run his defense.

McVay is interviewing with the Rams for a second time on Wednesday and Charles Robinson reported earlier that he has emerged as a “leading candidate” for the job.

Phillips has been mentioned for a number of jobs including the Redskins should he end up leaving Denver.

The expectation is that Dolphins DC Vance Joseph, who’s considered the top candidate for the Broncos’ head-coaching job, would look to someone else to run the team’s defense.

Phillips’ contract with the Broncos has expired making him one of the best available defensive coordinator options. Although, Phillips employs a 3-4 base defense, which could mean the Rams may end up making some changes to their defensive front next year if he’s hired to run their defense.

Phillips, 69, began his NFL coaching career with the Oilers back in 1976 and has worked for several teams in a number of capacities. He has served as the head coach of the  Broncos, Bills and Cowboys before returning to the Broncos as their defensive coordinator in 2015.

This season, the Broncos’ defense ranks No. 4 in yards allowed, No. 1 in passing yards allowed, No. 28 in rushing yards allowed and No. 9 in points per game.

We’ll have more regarding Phillips and where he could land as the news is available.
