Wes Welker A Potential Option For The Packers?

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentioned on Tuesday’s Total Access that the Green Bay Packers could be a team to keep an eye on for veteran WR Wes Welker.

  • According to Rapoport, the Packers are looking around at available receivers in the free agency, but aren’t willing to spend a lot on the position.
  • Rapoport adds that Welker would love the opportunity to play with another top-tier quarterback like Aaron Rodgers.

This is a somewhat surprising suggestion from Rapoport given that there has been no buzz whatsoever regarding Welker in the past few weeks.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported earlier in the day Welker is among a number of notable veteran receivers that have generated little or no interest on the open market thus far.

It’s worth mentioning that Green Bay re-signed Randall Cobb to a four-year, $40 million contract last week, and still have two young receivers to develop in Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis currently on their roster.

Welker has dealt with concussions in recent years and there was a report from last month that he could consider walking away from the game. However, he later refuted the idea and said that he’s planning to play in 2015.

Welker, 33, appeared in 14 games for the Broncos last year and caught 49 passes for 464 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 71 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
