Wes Welker Is “Going To Be Franchised”

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe mentioned that the New England Patriots will use their franchise tag on free agent WR Wes Welker during an appearance on Armando and Perkins.

He’s going to be tagged, that I know for pretty much certain,” said Bedard, via the Miami Herald. “If they don’t, he’s going to sign with the Jets and they’re going to have to try and cover him twice a year, or the Dolphins … They want him back. I don’t see why things would change now, but the way it stood before the Super Bowl, they’re going to tag him.”

NFL teams will not be able to tag players until February 20th but there’s no way that New England going to allow Welker to leave and risk him ending up with the Jets or Dolphins. A long-term contract is possibility for later on in the offseason but it seems like Welker could be in the same position again next season.
