Wes Welker Not Considering Retirement, Despite Recent Concussion

Broncos HC John Fox was asked whether WR Wes Welker was considering retirement after he suffered his third concussion in the past year.

That’s not been brought up at all,” Fox said, per Jeff Legwold. “I didn’t sense that.’’

Fox added that Welker is “very good” spirits and expects him to be back on the field as soon as he’s healthy.’

Mike Klis of the Denver Post mentioned earlier in the day that he expects Welker to be back for Week 1, and added that Welker’s “concussion helmet” may have helped absorb the blow.

Even with the optimism regarding Welker’s status moving forward, this remains a serious situation for his future health. Hopefully, he has sustained his last concussion and can return to being a very productive receiver in the Broncos’ offense.

Welker, 33, is entering the final year of his two-year, $12 million contract that he signed in 2013. He has a base salary of $3 million to go along with the $3 million roster bonus the Broncos have already paid him.

In his first season with the Broncos, Welker totaled 73 receptions for 778 yards receiving and a career high 10 touchdowns over the course of 13 games.
