Kevin Acee dissects the defensive line of the Chargers in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Acee confirms that sources expect the Chargers to release DE Luis Castillo before he earns another $4.9 million next month.
The release doesn’t necessarily mean Castillo won’t be back with the Chargers, who could still look to re-sign him at a reduced price in the open market. The Chargers will also attempt to resign NT Antonio Garay in the open market.
Should the Chargers be able to retain or replace Garay, Castillo, and backup DE/DT Tommie Harris through free agency, they very well could still spend a late-round draft pick on the line. If, however, there is a significant player not replaced, they could certainly go D-line in the early rounds. Young players Cam Thomas (NT), Vaughn Martin (DE), and Corey Liuget (DE) have bright futures, but there is still a serious need to upgrade the pass rush and cement the center of the line.
Could it be ominous that as Castillo is reported to be released, the DL position was tearing up the combine? DL Dontari Poe just blew some minds at the combine and DE Whitney Mercilus looked strong as well.
