Jamison Hensley of ESPN mentions that the signing of free agent S Tony Jefferson likely means that the Ravens will be releasing veteran CB Lardarius Webb in the coming days.
The Ravens now have one of the most impressive safety tandems in the NFL with Jefferson and Eric Weddle manning the backend of their defense. While Webb previously played cornerback, it’s unlikely that the Ravens would move him back to that position, as opposed to taking the cap space.
Webb, 31, is a former third-round pick of the Ravens back in 2009. He has spent his entire eight-year career with the Ravens and is entering the final year of his six-year, $52.742 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $5.5 million for the 2017 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Webb would free up $5.5 million of available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.
In 2016, Webb appeared in all 16 games for the Ravens and recorded 73 tackles, one sack, an interception and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 15 safety out of 89 qualifying players.
