Bears Promote QB Tyler Bray From Practice Squad, Release DB Marcus Cooper

The Chicago Bears have promoted QB Tyler Bray from their practice squad to the active roster in time for Week 12’s Thanksgiving game.

The Bears have released DB Marcus Cooper in a corresponding roster move.

The Bears are likely to start QB Chase Daniel this week after listing starting QB Mitch Trubisky as doubtful for Week 12 due to lingering AC joint sprain in his shoulder. Bray will be Daniel’s primary backup for Thursday.

Bray, 26, wound up signing on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee back in 2015. He was entering the final year of his three-year, $1.485 million rookie contract when Bray and the Chiefs agreed to a two-year extension before the start of the 2015 season.

The Bears signed Bray to a contract this past March but waived him as they trimmed their roster down to the 53-man limit. Chicago signed him to their practice squad once he passed through waivers unclaimed.

In 2017, Bray appeared in one game for the Chiefs and took a knee to end the game.

Cooper, 28, is a former seventh-round pick of the 49ers back in 2013. He was, unfortunately, unable to make the 49ers’ 53-man roster during his rookie season, but was later claimed off of waivers by the Chiefs.

The Chiefs traded Cooper to the Cardinals in return forย a conditional 2018 seventh-roundย pick and he played his contract before signing a three-year, $16 million deal with the Bears last year.

He was set to make base salaries of $5 million over the final two years when the Bears cut him loose last offseason. Cooper re-signed with Chicago to a one-year contract worth up to $2.5 million.

In 2018, Cooper has appeared in two games for the Bears but did not record any statistics.
