Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Bears are releasing veteran TE Trey Burton on Friday.
According to Adam Jahns, the Bears will designate Burton as a post-June 1 release.
It was clear that Burton’s time in Chicago was in question after the Bears went out and signed Jimmy Graham at the start of free agency.
Burton, 28, wound up signing on with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Florida back in 2014. He played out his three-year, $1,537,500 contract with the Eagles before returning to Philadelphia on a one-year restricted deal in 2017.
Burton later signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Bears as an unrestricted free agent in 2018.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Burton with a post-June 1 designation will free up $2.8 million of available cap space while creating $5,750,000 in dead money.
In 2019, Burton appeared in eight games and recorded 14 receptions for 84 yards receiving (6.0 YPC) and no touchdowns. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 63 overall tight end out of 70 qualifying players.
